Y Bastard Jac/Swim Away directly addresses my adopted home town of Swansea and its challenging relationship with his birthplace of Cardiff. Using the difficult relationship between the two cities football teams, Goddard picks out the colloquial term and call and response between the two sets of fans, creating a defiance against his adopted home and highlighting his support of his origins. Sounding almost like a racial slur, the potential misunderstanding within the piece echoes Goddard’s own feeling about place – if not in your home town, where can you truly feel a sense of place?

Thanks to Fiona MacDonald and Carla Wright for all their time, support and guidance.
